Here’s another great organization I’d like to put out there! Battling Life Together-BLT

by Andrew

I love working as a network with other smaller organizations that help folks living with cancer. Here’s a great one that we worked with in August 2013 at our JUICING Jamestown event. Give their Facebook page a view and like them.

Here is another small organization in NC like The Mama Edna Project that does BIG things for folks with cancer. Please like and share their page and help if you can. Battling Life Together – BLT provides care baskets to those in need.

Battling Life Together provides free comfort packages to cancer patients. We strive to make a difference in the community and to support and provide a smile to those in need. We also take into consideration the caregivers who stand by their side.

Our Spring fundraiser JUICING JoCO!!!!! is almost here!

by Andrew

On Sunday, April 27th, 2014, please help us raise awareness and funding for financially disabled folks living with cancer and other degenerative disease. Double Barley Brewing, located at 3174 U.S. 70, Smithfield, NC 27577 will be hosting this event. They are donating a portion of ALL pint beer sales to our project. Please come out in support of The Mama Edna Project and help us honor the life and legacy of Mama Edna Honeycutt McLamb as she felt strongly about “paying it forward” in any way she could. There will be great live music from great triangle musicians including Mike Edwards, Emma Davis, and Chrystal Dail Leonard and more. Stop by the juicing table to see Andrew Klutz and Timothy McLamb, founders of the project, for tasty, refreshing and cancer-fighting juices as well as pick up literature from The American Cancer Society about cancer prevention and treatment. Please see our Facebook page for the official event invitation and RSVP to the event. We want to see lots of familiar faces from JoCo and beyond. Thanks so much for your support!

Growing your own wheatgrass

by Andrew

Grow your own wheatgrass for much less than buying it at the grocery store. Wheatgrass for juicing is a sprouted grass, usually harvested in 7 to 9 days from the inital soaking days. I now only order in bulk the wheatgrass seed (10 pounds) and the azomite fertilizer (2 pound bag). These can be found in the “REFILL” section of the website. (http://www.wheatgrasskits.com/sprouting/wheat_berries_sprouting_seed.htm) and (http://www.wheatgrasskits.com/azomite.htm). I no longer order trays. They are too big for home use. And I refuse to pay for shipping on the bags of compost. I now use a product from Lowe’s Home Improvement called Burpee Eco-Friendly Organic Seed Starting Mix (but you can use any organics seed starting mix that is light-weight, not potting soil).

Here’s the process.

1. In a small bowl (I use a Chinese delivery soup container), rinse and soak 1/4 cup seed. Soak for 24 hours.

2. After 24 hours, drain and rinse soaked seed several times. Drain completely, but do not dry the seeds. Place a damp paper towel (get yourself a brand that comes from recycled paper like Marcal) folded into 4 layers to cover the seeds completely. Keep damp with a spray bottle mister of water for up to 24 more hours.

3. Now, it’s time to plant. At this point you will most likely see little roots sprouting. Using a clean recycled “greens” container (the Earthbound Organics 5 oz container), place 2 handfuls of the seed starting mix into the container, spreading to about 1 to 1 1/2 inch thickness. This soil is only here to hold moisture and nutrients. Sprinkle a thin layer of the azomite over the starting mix (I use a flour/powdered sugar sprinkle can dedicated to this purpose). Evenly spread sprouted seeds over soil. Lightly, but thoroughly water the seeds and soil mix (not standing water). Cover with the container lid, but do not seal. Place containers in the coolest room in the house, out of direct sun. Wheatgrass does best at under 72 degrees and will have fewer mold issues.

4. After 24-36 hours, lift the lid and thoroughly mist seeds and soil. Replace the lid. as the wheatgrass grows, it will push the lid off naturally.

7. Soon the sprouts will begin to push the lid up and away. Keep sprouts moist. In 7 to 9 days, your wheatgrass should be about 7 to 9 inches tall and is ready for harvest. Harvest when ready to use immediately and snip into 1 inch lengths for best results in your “slow” juicer like the Hurom, Omega or Breville. I use half to the whole container at a time for my large juice drinks. Harvest only once, though it will regrow. Most of the nutrients are depleted once harvested. I then allow the wheatgrass to regrow and let my cats enjoy it or compost the rest.

8. To maintain a supply of wheatgrass, this process should begin anew every day or every other day, depending on how much wheatgrass you are juicing. After 9 days, store UN-harvested wheatgrass in its growing container in the frig. Use before it turns yellow.

Are you newly diagnosed with cancer or is someone you know?

by Andrew

Receiving the news that you have cancer is never easy. The emotional impact is huge to you and your loved ones. It is also overwhelming because there are so many questions and answers and options and what if’s and to whom do I turn for the right answers and on and on. I have sat with so many cancer clients over the last year. I have heard all of this first hand and I have heard the conversations with the oncologists and the radiologists. Just in case I have not made myself clear on this subject, I am NOT a doctor, nor a dietician, nor any kind of academically trained medical professional. What I am is an intelligent, well-educated, caring, sympathetic, compassionate individual who got handed the difficult task of becoming part of a caregiver team to Mama Edna when she was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer in January 2013.

Before making any major decision about treatment, please do yourself a favor. Do not let the oncology/radiology team strong arm you into begin treatment tomorrow. It happens all the time. You have cancer already. You have cancer probably because your body is lacking something it needed to fight off cancer. Research shows that almost every human body has free-floating cancer cells in it 8-10 times during the average human life-span. How your body handles those cancer cells depends on your body’s strength, dietary intake and over health of your immune system.

Take control of your cancer therapy. Take things at your pace. Delay medical and chemical treatments by at least three weeks and get your body prepared for the onslaught of toxins, chemical and radiation that is about to slam your immune system out of orbit. I have spoken to many caregivers and family members over the last year who tell me that cancer did not kill my father, mother, brother, sister, etc., CHEMO killed my loved one.

What steps should you take to prepare for chemo? From many testimonials I have read and/or been given by several of our clients, start with detoxing the body. Cleanse the body by cleaning up your diet IMMEDIATELY. Don’t wait until tomorrow. You don’t have the luxury of time here. Get a copy of Rebecca Katz’s cookbook called The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen. You will learn more in the first fifty pages of this book (prior to where the recipes begin) than your team of docs will ever tell you.

The big lessons here? FIRST, reduce sugar to a bare minimum: use honey, molasses, or organic maple syrup in small amounts if you must have sugar. Or use a little raw sugar, again minimally. ABSOLUTELY NO WHITE SUGAR! SECOND, open your pantry and freezer. Throw out all the boxed, prepackaged, processed food items containing high sodium contents, high-fructose corn syrup (usually in most packaged foods), non-organic or GMO/GE (genetically modified or genetically engineered) ingredients, or loads of processed sugars. THIRD, reduce dairy and meat intake as these foods create mucous build up in the body. Two of cancer’s favorite foods are sugar and mucous. Use the cookbook mentioned above for healthy, cancer-fighting proteins, but limit proteins in general. Think wild caught, oily fishes, almonds, quinoa,  free-range organic chicken. But again, in small quantities. Eat instead larger quantities of raw, steamed or stir-fried veggies, cooked only until slightly tender. Don’t overcook them as they lose more of their nutrients and don’t boil them in large quantities of water as the nutrients land in the water and not your body. These are just a few guidelines to get you started.

Now to ALKALIZE your body. Please see my note on alkalizing the body through what you consume daily here on Facebook. But add this step as well. Limit alcoholic beverage intake to one a day, as well as coffee. Before consuming anything in the morning. start your day with 8 ounces room temperature water with TWO TABLESPOONS fresh lemon juice (not Real Lemon from a bottle or elsewhere, a lemon squeezed fresh) and TWO TEASPOONS apple cider vinegar (preferably Bragg’s brand). Drink this elixir daily before anything else. Let it do its work for 30 minutes before you eat or drink anything else. It will help bile production and flow and help remove toxins from the gut, liver and kidneys. It will also slowly help bring up the blood pH levels. Normal blood pH levels in the human body range from 7.35-7.45. When the pH falls below that level, your body is more susceptible to degenerative diseases of all types. Above that level, your body shuts down. Healthy digestive organs will usually find the correct balance.

If you have access to a juicer, I suggest beginning a serious juicing routine on a daily basis. As I discuss this often here and on our blog at www.themamaednaproject.com, I will not go into great detail here in this note. Please see juicing recipes here and on the blog, or reach out to me for individual juicing needs and questions.

For any questions about juicing, resources to guide you about your care during cancer, dietary concerns, caregiver concerns or other cancer-related topics, please reach out to me here or at my email address at themamaednaproject@gmail.com or call/text me at 919-780-8669. Remember, I am no doctor, when I will hopefully help you find the answers you need.

Update of on our client, DeEtta Wood

by Andrew

There are so many stories out there about people who have helped fight their cancer through great nutrition with or without medical treatments, but it is a story like this one that makes me believe in what The Mama Edna Project is doing. Here’s the latest update on one of our clients, DeEtta Wood from her husband Jeff:

“DeEtta and I are forever in your debt for the kindness that you have shown us through this trying time. The juicer that we use every day is now our good friend and a reminder of that kindness. It continues to operate without any trouble.

DeEtta received her sixth chemotherapy treatment yesterday and is doing well. Her leg injury is healing very well and the pain from the crushed vertebrae is manageable with a lower dosage of morphine than before. She experiences the fatigue and some of the nausea from the treatments, but overall she feels well and looks good.

As you already know, the results from the PET scan that she received after the third treatment showed dramatic response to the treatment. The doctor was impressed with the results, stating that a response this good was rarely seen. After the fourth treatment, a CT scan showed very similar results. Also, the blood work that was performed this Monday showed that her hemoglobin was at 11 (an improvement and almost normal) and most all of the numbers were in the normal range including liver and kidney functions.

She is now juicing twice a day (a total of 32 ounces). My standard recipe includes about five carrots, a large handful each kale, spinach and super greens, an apple, a pear, 1/2 lemon and a small amount of ginger. Sometimes I add in avocado, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, romaine lettuce or sweet potato. To her juices, I add super foods powder (most days six ounces). She takes wheatgrass everyday, sometimes in a shot and sometimes in her juice. Every morning she drinks a twelve ounce glass of water with two teaspoons each lemon juice and Bragg’s apple cider vinegar and a dash each of cayenne pepper and cinnamon. She is also taking probiotics. She eats no sugar, stays away from fast food and processed foods. She eats a tremendous amount of raw foods. I shop at Whole Foods a lot! Your comment or advice an any of this will be appreciated.

We have been given advice by many others with experiences treating cancer through nutrition and alternative means. Everything that I have been told goes back to something that you said to us that Sunday afternoon in our kitchen. I give you so much credit for opening our eyes to the importance of promoting the best health of DeEtta’s body during treatment and actively fighting the cancer that threatens her life. I also thank you for the information, the support and the investment of resources that you have contributed to our fight.”
