Turmeric Tuesday for 01.10.2017

by Andrew

Tried turmeric yet in the New Year!! There are many ways to get additional amounts of this anti-cancer spice into your body. Just remember that the addition of black pepper and/or a good, healthy fat like coconut oil to the turmeric helps the body with absorption of it and increases its bio-availability. Try this great dressing recipe from the Give Recipe Pinterest page. I would also add some black pepper to the salad.

Cleansing Detox Soup

Ingredients
  1. 1/4 cup water (or vegetable broth)
  2. 1/2 of a red onion, diced
  3. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  4. 3 celery stalks, diced
  5. 3 medium carrots, diced
  6. 1 small head of broccoli, florets
  7. 1 cup chopped tomatoes
  8. 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, peeled and minced
  9. 1 teaspoon turmeric (I used powdered)
  10. 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  11. 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste (optional)
  12. fine-grain sea salt and black pepper, to taste
  13. 6 cups water (or 4 cups vegetable broth + 2 cups water)
  14. 2 cups kale, de-stemmed and torn in pieces
  15. 1 cup purple cabbage, chopped
  16. juice from 1/2 of a small lemon (or a whole lemon, depending how much lemon flavor you prefer)
Instructions
  1. In a large pot, add the water and turn on the heat to medium-high. After it’s hot, add the onion and garlic. Sauté for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the celery, carrots, broccoli, tomatoes and fresh ginger. Stir and cook for 3 minutes, adding in extra water or broth as needed (another 1/4 cup). Stir in the turmeric, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper plus salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Add in the water or vegetable broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until vegetables are soft. Add in the kale, cabbage and lemon juice near the last 2-3 minutes of simmering.
  3. Enjoy!
Notes
  1. This cleansing recipe is oil-free because avoiding the use of oil during a cleansing meal is important for the detoxification process (and you won’t miss the oil at all due to all the flavor!) but if you feel like cooking with oil, use a minimal amount – 1 tablespoon or less.
  2. Leftovers stay well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

I recommend cleansing with every new season. My 5-Day Body Balance Cleanse promotes whole food nourishment rather than deprivation, with real and fresh body-loving ingredients to get you feeling balanced and refreshed. I love doing this 5-Day Cleanse after the holidays, before and/or after a vacation and whenever I feel like hitting the reset button on my body too! You will feel amazing.

Happy cleansing!

Turmeric Tuesday for November 22, 2016

by Andrew
Here’s a great way to include turmeric in your daily diet over the winter months. This hot tea will warm your cold bones and help detox at the same time. The addition of coconut oil and black pepper help with the bio-availability of the turmeric. This tea is loaded with great spices for the winter months.
Fill a two quart sauce pan halfway with filtered water and place on medium-high heat. Add to the pot a one to two inch “finger” of fresh turmeric, sliced. Then add an inch of sliced ginger. In a tea ball infuser or a tea bag if you have them, add one teaspoon each of cumin seeds, coriander seeds, and fennel seeds along with one or two pieces of star anise and drop into water. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to a simmer covered for 20-30 minutes. At this point you have a couple of different options. You can drink this tea as is with a little honey, a teaspoon of coconut oil and a grind of fresh black pepper or you can steep a tea bag of green, matcha, chamomile or a lemony tea bag for 5 minutes in a cup and then add the honey, coconut oil and black pepper.
Relax and enjoy the warmth and the detox.

Turmeric Tuesday 10/18/2016

Today’s yummy turmeric goodness from from a friend who is a chef and an cancer survivor, as well as a wife to a farmer. Lee Newlin and her husband Larry Newlin, own Peaceful River Farms in Chapel Hill, NC. This recipe for “Jamu” tea follows. See their website below the recipe.

AND Happy Turmeric Tuesday!!!!

Warming “Jamu” (Turmeric Tea) serves 2

Turmeric is an ancient Indian yellow spice used for centuries that has an active ingredient called curcumin.  It has significant anti-inflammatory properties as well as a host of other health benefits. Turmeric is also fantastic for digestion and cleansing the liver which is the “filter” for our body.

Whenever we feel pain in joints and muscles or just want to boost our immune system, we make some Jamu or Golden Milk tea just before bedtime.  Drinking turmeric tea in the morning and evenings may make all the difference in soothing joint pain.   Make sure and add black pepper as it enhances bioavailability of turmeric as well as makes the tea invigorating.  The maple syrup sets off the earthy-acridness of the spice enough that the tea is still delicious. Udo’s  oil added at the end is full of DHA that helps with inflammation.  I use coconut milk because it is full of healthy fats and is so good for you!  Turmeric tends to stain anything it comes into contact with, so be careful!

-To your good health, Lee Newlin

Ingredients

  • 2 cups unsweetened coconut, flax, almond, hemp, soy milk or filtered water
  • ½  teaspoon  fresh turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp of freshly grated nutmeg
  • 2 slices of fresh ginger
  • black pepper (just a pinch)
  • 1 tsp of fresh lemon juice
  • 4 tsp. maple syrup or honey
  • 1 tsp sesame oil or Udo oil (great for joints) (Whole Foods carries both)

Directions

  1. Gently bring milk just to a simmer and whisk in all the ingredients, except the lemon, sweetener and oil. Let sit for 5 minutes and then remove ginger slices.
  2. Whisk in the lemon, oil and maple syrup just before serving hot.
  3. For a frothy and creamy consistency use an emersion blender and blend for 10-15 seconds.
  4. Stir now and then as you drink so all the good stuff doesn’t settle to the bottom, or top off with hot water as you drink it.  We like a few drops of sesame oil and a sprinkle of cinnamon or grated nutmeg on top to finish it off.
