Turmeric Tuesday for 01.31.17

by Andrew

Here’s a great mix of produce that would lend well to both juicing and blending to get your daily intake of turmeric. Don’t forget to add a pinch of black pepper to increase the bio-availability of the turmeric or add a tablespoon of coconut oil to your smoothie for the same reason.  This recipe comes from a Pinterest page called #juicingmomma and benandme.com.

Carrot-Pineapple-Turmeric Juice -- Carrots are one of my favorite veggies to juice, especially when I’m looking for a little sweetness. Carrots go perfectly with pineapple and turmeric, two incredible foods to reduce inflammation. This is really yummy, y’all. #jucing #juicingmomma:

Our version of an Immunity Boosting Broth

by Andrew
Immunity Boosting Broth, our version
When either of us starts to feel a little under the weather, we turn to food to bring us back to our norm. Through a combination of juicing, blending and just eating good, wholesome foods like broths and soups, we mange to kick the crud out of the house. At any given time, we have many quarts of Magic Mineral Broth, the awesome base broth from Rebecca Katz’s cookbook The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen (see her page https://www.facebook.com/Rebecca-Ka…) and we use it often for soups, stews, cooking vegetables and greens and so on. But, we really love Tom Yum Thai soup for a healing and cleansing soup. To make our version of an immunity boosting broth, we offer you this recipe.
2 to 3 quarts of Magic Mineral Broth or other organic vegetable stock (http://www.rebeccakatz.com/magic-mi…)
In a medium stockpot, add to the above stock:
4 smashed, but unpeeled garlic cloves
2 to 3 entire stalks of lemongrass, cut on the bias into one inch pieces
2 inches slices ginger, peel on
8-10 pieces of cilantro, stems and leaves intact
1-2 Bird’s eye chilies with seeds, cut in half
Bring to a gentle boil for 10 minutes. Reduce heat and simmer 30 to 45 minutes. Pour into cup, leaving solids in the pot to continue to add flavor. Add a dash of organic tamari for some salty goodness and a squeeze of 1/4 of a lime for vitamin C and acidity. Drink and enjoy. I promise, this will create a cleansing moment or two fairly rapidly.

Here’s a great recipe we found on Pinterest. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/452822937518544661/

It’s called Turmeric-Ginger Chicken Soup. It will quickly replace your chicken noodle soup recipe because it is so hardy and full of healthy goodness. We actually used a quart or more of Rebecca Katz’s recipe for Magic Mineral Broth (MMB) from her cookbook The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen as part of the water in the stock. Find the MMB recipe here

Here’s an article that we shared 3 years ago today to helped us move forward with The Mama Edna Project. We found it on trihealth.com and it really drills down to the basic reasons to add juicing to your daily regimen, especially if you have immunity issues or have a digestive tract that is compromised due to a health disorder or disease like cancer or due to their treatment plans.

Turmeric Tuesday for 01.10.2017

by Andrew

Tried turmeric yet in the New Year!! There are many ways to get additional amounts of this anti-cancer spice into your body. Just remember that the addition of black pepper and/or a good, healthy fat like coconut oil to the turmeric helps the body with absorption of it and increases its bio-availability. Try this great dressing recipe from the Give Recipe Pinterest page. I would also add some black pepper to the salad.

Oxygen Tanks, Power Outages and Inclement Weather

by Andrew

Every year, we like to send a note out several times over the course of winter and even during warmer months if there is a chance that weather will cause a power outage. I know that folks with cancer or other serious illness already have a lot on their minds just dealing with this disease, so please, if you know someone who may be alone, check on them today with this coming weather to be sure they have what they need. If they are using oxygen, please check to see if they have a large back-up O2 tank in the event of a power failure and be sure they can get to it easily and that it is indeed functional. Be sure their O2 hose is long enough to reach from the back-up tank to the an area where they are warm and can rest comfortably. If there are any issues, please call the O2 provider to get it resolved.

Check to see if the person has registered their home with the power company as a home where someone has a medical need and need to be prioritized for power recovery as soon as possible. Most back-up tanks are 24-36 hours plus any mobile tanks available that are used while traveling to and from appointments. I have experienced times where the provider placed the tanks too far from the patient’s reach. Please lend a hand if you can.

Also, be sure the person has sufficient bottles of water or pots of water on the stove for drinking and a tub full of water for flushing the toilets. Remember, many folks in rural areas are on a well source for water. With no power, there is no water.

Our First Turmeric Tuesday of 2017!!

by Andrew

For Turmeric Tuesday 01.03.2017, try this delicious detox soup we found on Pinterest from The Glowing Fridge’s page. It’s loaded with cancer fighting ingredients, including turmeric, as well as loads of produce that will help you detox in the New Year. Not only can you #juicingforcancer, but this allows you to eat to fight cancer. Here’s the link and i copied the recipe for you below. Please visit their site for more information.

Cleansing Detox Soup

Ingredients
  1. 1/4 cup water (or vegetable broth)
  2. 1/2 of a red onion, diced
  3. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  4. 3 celery stalks, diced
  5. 3 medium carrots, diced
  6. 1 small head of broccoli, florets
  7. 1 cup chopped tomatoes
  8. 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, peeled and minced
  9. 1 teaspoon turmeric (I used powdered)
  10. 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  11. 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste (optional)
  12. fine-grain sea salt and black pepper, to taste
  13. 6 cups water (or 4 cups vegetable broth + 2 cups water)
  14. 2 cups kale, de-stemmed and torn in pieces
  15. 1 cup purple cabbage, chopped
  16. juice from 1/2 of a small lemon (or a whole lemon, depending how much lemon flavor you prefer)
Instructions
  1. In a large pot, add the water and turn on the heat to medium-high. After it’s hot, add the onion and garlic. Sauté for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the celery, carrots, broccoli, tomatoes and fresh ginger. Stir and cook for 3 minutes, adding in extra water or broth as needed (another 1/4 cup). Stir in the turmeric, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper plus salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Add in the water or vegetable broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until vegetables are soft. Add in the kale, cabbage and lemon juice near the last 2-3 minutes of simmering.
  3. Enjoy!
Notes
  1. This cleansing recipe is oil-free because avoiding the use of oil during a cleansing meal is important for the detoxification process (and you won’t miss the oil at all due to all the flavor!) but if you feel like cooking with oil, use a minimal amount – 1 tablespoon or less.
  2. Leftovers stay well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

I recommend cleansing with every new season. My 5-Day Body Balance Cleanse promotes whole food nourishment rather than deprivation, with real and fresh body-loving ingredients to get you feeling balanced and refreshed. I love doing this 5-Day Cleanse after the holidays, before and/or after a vacation and whenever I feel like hitting the reset button on my body too! You will feel amazing.

Happy cleansing!

Happy New Year!!

by Andrew

#juicingforcancer

Happy New Year folks! May the juice be with you in 2017!! Here’s a quick one day detox to get you started!!

One Day Juice Detox

I am not one to go without solid food for long, but I do realize the health benefits of a juice cleanse on occasion. I choose to do a more gentle approach. I do a one day juice cleanse every other week or so, along with a a 90 massage on one of those cleanse days, followed by a 30 minute Epsom salt bath.

Here’s the drill: In the morning, I make a cranberry lemonade and drink it all down within an hour or so.

2 cups fresh or thawed frozen cranberries

1 apple like Granny Smith or Gala (avoid Red or Golden Delicious as these apples are over bred for beauty, not for flavor nor nutrition)

1 lemon, peel on

16 ounces filtered water (I use reverse osmosis water)

Juice in the order listed. Enjoy. This juice is very sour. It gets easier over time. But the sourness helps get the bile moving in your body to begin the detox process. Drink a glass of water every hour (Stop drinking fluids about two hours before your massage if you have small bladder syndrome like I do.)

Next up, make a green juice.

Breakfast Green Juice

1 large cucumber, unpeeled if organic, 4 medium carrots, 4 stalks of celery, 1 1/2 inch knuckle of ginger root, peeled, 1 medium turmeric root, 2-3 slices of lemon, peel on, 1 to 2 apples, depending on sweetness desired. 1/2 to one container of prewashed “boxed” organic greens (rotate the type of greens every four days), and 1 container fresh wheatgrass, clipped into inch pieces. Sometimes I throw in a clove of garlic or a beet for variety and additional detoxification. Wash all produce in a sink of water with 1/4 cup of vinegar for 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and dry. I use a “slow” or masticating juicer. So for this type of machine, chop produce into pieces under 2 inches square. I sometimes chop into even smaller pieces for harder produce. Process through the juicer. Enjoy immediately or store in an airtight glass jar for up to 6 hours, leaving as little head room as possible to avoid oxidation of the juice. Get your green buzz going!

Drink more water.

Go have a massage. Come home and drink two glasses of water.

Fill your bath tub with fairly hot water and add two cups of Epsom salt and perhaps some lavender essential oil for relaxation. Soak for 30 minutes. Rinse off under cool water using no soap or shampoo, just cool water. Dry off and chill out with another couple of glasses of water. For dinner, choose mostly a vegan meal with lots of green veggies and minimal protein. If you wish, have a small portion of good fish or a small chicken burger. But eat light. Get a good nights rest and feel refreshed.

Repeat the cleanse at least every other week. Have a monthly massage. (If you need a great massage therapist, let me know. I have an awesome one.) And do the Epsom salt bath weekly. Feel refreshed!
